Tarheel Challenge Academy

Edison Foard was honored to work on the Tarheel Challenge Academy project in New London, NC. This facility is for housing and educating at-risk children, motivating us to go above and beyond with every aspect of this project. This endeavor was a three-phase project consisting of a major renovation of three buildings with minor work on two additional structures.

The renovation included demolition, an added fire sprinkler system in a dormitory building, new CMU walls, a renovation of and addition to existing HVAC systems, and new electrical systems throughout. The project also consisted of updates to the bathrooms, including the installation of new concrete slabs in the updated toilet and shower areas, in addition to new gang toilets, showers, locker rooms, new plumbing fixtures, toilet partitions, and toilet accessories. The kitchen also was completely renovated and was outfitted with all-new kitchen equipment. Outside these buildings, we restored the existing parking lot and painted new striping.

The Tarheel Challenge Academy project also required new fixtures, such as drywall partitions, acoustical ceilings, painted walls and trim, epoxy floors, carpet, and VCT flooring. Edison Foard also installed new casework and solid surface tops and replaced all exterior glass in an old classroom building.

This old classroom building held a unique challenge: the preservation and restoration of existing finishes that were nearly a hundred years old. The wood floors were from the 1930s and covered for years, requiring significant work to restore them to their original state.

This facility is owned by Stanly County but operated jointly by the County and the North Carolina National Guard. We were proud to work on such an exciting project, and hope that it gives back to the community for years to come.
