Charlotte Douglas International Airport – Entrance Monument

The Charlotte Douglass International Airport Entry Monument project was a landmark project for Edison Foard. The task was to create a prominent sign structure at the entrance of the airport that would welcome travelers from all over the world in a way that conveyed the history of the region, while also being memorable and attractive.

This proved to be no small feat, as the central structure is 30 feet tall and covers an area of 1,700 SF. The design is inspired by Queen Charlotte’s crown and features aluminum fins that are carefully mounted on a base of concrete and fiberglass. The crown itself uses illuminated letters to spell out the airport’s name on its base. Each fin is equipped with acrylic lights designed to simulate movement through their varying heights and color-changing LED lights.

This project also included two additional signs that bear the airport’s code, CLT, reinforcing the airport’s identity and character to arriving and departing passengers. These signs are also prominent, being 22 feet in width and 8 feet in height. Together, the crown, fins, and signage enhance the visual appeal and identity of the airport for travelers.
